We research sim room components on the decisions that actually cost money when you get them wrong: launch monitor indoor accuracy, mat joint-health design, projector throw ratio math, and total first-year cost including subscriptions.
Who writes these picks
Divotloft is written and maintained by its editorial team. We publish under the Divotloft name rather than a personal byline, because our rankings come from documented research rather than one person's hands-on experience. Where a specification, measurement, or figure appears in a guide, it comes from the manufacturer or a cited source, not from our own bench.
What we score on
Every pick is judged on the same criteria. We weight them by what actually matters for the way you will use the gear, then write up the tradeoffs honestly.
Indoor accuracy
For launch monitors: does the unit measure spin directly or estimate it, and how does that affect data quality on a sub-15-foot indoor ball flight? We read the sensor specification against published test data from MyGolfSpy and owner reports on r/golfsimulators.
Joint health
For hitting mats: is the mat built to absorb fat-shot impact or to bounce the club back? We weigh published fiber density and gel-system construction against owner reports of wrist and elbow soreness over extended use.
Room fit math
For projectors and enclosures: we run the throw ratio calculations from the manufacturer specification for the screen sizes and room depths we recommend. We never describe a projector without stating its throw ratio and the room depth it requires.
Total cost of ownership
Hardware price plus subscription costs plus mandatory accessories. A $700 launch monitor that requires a $300 per year subscription and $50 per year in metallic dot stickers has a different true cost than its sticker price suggests.
Software compatibility
We check the published compatibility documentation for every launch monitor and software platform pairing we recommend before we publish. Compatibility mismatches are the most common and most expensive mistake a first-time builder makes.
Community validation
We cite r/golfsimulators, MyGolfSpy, and Yardstick Golf data rather than asserting without evidence. If the community data conflicts with manufacturer claims, we say so.
How our picks work
